There are a total of 1770 Private Unaided Schools in Delhi. Click here to see the list of all the Private Unaided Schools in Delhi
All the schools built on a particular religious or linguistic belief fall under the category of Minority schools. Eg: Sikh, Christian, Muslim schools. They can reserve seats for the minority groups in their schools. Click here to see the List of all the Minority Schools in Delhi
The government has strictly stated that that the schools cannot ask for submission of the original document at the time of registration. Parents need to submit only self-attested copies of the documents/ certificates. But the parents must produce the original documents at the time of admissions if selected. The schools might also cancel the admission of the child if the documents produced at the time of registration are found to be false/ do no match the original documents.
Yes, the parents of twins must fill separate admission forms for both the children
The admission to private unaided schools in Delhi for the General Category applicants happens through a point system where every applicant is assigned points basis the selection criteria adopted by the school, with a maximum of 100 points. The applicants with the higher number of points get selected as per seat availability in the school. If applicants have the same score, then the decision is made through a lucky draw. Some common selection parameters are:
Neighborhood: The distance of school from the applicant’s home is one of the highest weighted criteria used by schools. Today, most of the schools adhere to this and give maximum weight to the child staying closer to the school. The points allotted to the neighborhood varies from school to school. Some schools use radial distance to calculate distance, other schools use distance by road. Some schools like Queen Mary’s School ask for the proof of distance on an affidavit
(Click here to download a sample Distance Affidavit), some other schools like Sachdeva Public School simply ask for a print out of the distance on Google Maps.
Alumni: Many schools also give benefit to the child if his/her parent is an alumnus of the school. Some schools consider parents belonging to the same education society as an alumnus. Eg. Apeejay School, Springdales school. Some schools demand that parents should have studied in either X or XII to be considered as an alumnus. Schools like Mata Jai Kaur Public School, Ashok Vihar are okay with parents studying at least one year in the school. Some others might demand a minimum of 5 years.
Girl: A lot of schools these days allot points to a girl candidate. St. Andrew Scots Sr. Sec. School allots points to the girl child.
Staff ward: Schools like Bal Vikas Public School award certain points to the child belonging to the ward of a staff member. Some schools also award points to grandchildren of staff employed at the school.
Only Child: There are some schools which give weight to the single/first child of the parent.
Delhi Police Personnel: These are school specific parameters. Few schools like Delhi Police Public School allocate some points to the child if the parent is a Delhi Police personnel.
Single Parent: Some schools allot points to the child who is parented by a single parent.
Transferred from Other City: Schools like Sovereign Public School allot points to the child transferred from other cities/ states. It could be a government or a private job interstate, city or international transfer.
Linguistic & Regional Minority: Schools like Montfort School, Jaspal Kaur Public School etc. allot points to linguistic and regional minority students.
Adopted Child: Schools like Shri Ram School allot points in the case of an adopted child.
Delhi Police Personnel: These are school specific parameters. Few schools like Delhi Police Public School allocate some points to the child if the parent is a Delhi Police personnel.
The point system has been attained to provide maximum transparency in admission process with minimum discretion to schools. It is important to note the following:
The following selection parameters have been banned by the government & no private unaided school of Delhi can select or shortlist students basis them:
Family Credentials:
Child Credentials:
School Specific Criteria:
General Category: The distance parameter is one selection criterion which is used by almost every private unaided school of Delhi. Different schools give different weight to the distance parameter. The distance is always calculated between the school & the address mentioned in the address proof, attached as a supporting document by the applicant. Some schools use the radial distance, some use motorable distance as a reference. Some schools may also demand you to put a print out of the google maps as a supporting document (Eg: Aadharshila Vidyapeeth). Some schools like Queen Mary may also ask for a declaration of the distance on an affidavit. Click here to download a sample Distance Affidavit.
No. It is important to mark that only brothers and sisters sharing blood relation with the child & who are currently studying in the same school for which you have applied will be considered as the sibling.
No, It is important to mark that schools consider only brothers and sisters sharing blood relation with the child & who are already studying in the same school as the sibling of the applicant. So twins shall not receive points under the Sibling category.Note: Twins might get points under the sibling criterion in some schools. See the next question for answers.
Different schools in Delhi have adopted different practices. Here are some of the scenarios:
This again is a school-specific question and schools are free to fix their own criterion. Some schools give first-child points to both the children & some do not allocate points to this criterion at all.
The Schools have the rights to define this criterion on its own. Some schools want X & XII standard mark sheet. Others are okay with parents studying at least a year in the school.
Yes they shall be considered under interstate transfer category and are not limited to just the government jobs but private as well. Schools shall figure out themselves that transparent & proper modalities are followed by parents when producing documents.
General Category: The admission to private unaided schools in Delhi for the general category applicants happens through a point system where every applicant is assigned points basis the selection criteria adopted by the school. Some common selection parameters are Distance from school, Girl Child, Alumni Parent, Sibling in the same school etc. After receiving all the applications, the school now sets a cut-off score & all the parents scoring above that cut-off score get admission in the first list. The parents who got the same score as the cut-off score are invited to the draw of lots which is nothing but a lucky draw. Naturally, seats are lower than the number of applications in the draw of lots, so the school writes down the application number of each applicant & starts taking out the chits from the bowl. The number of chits taken out is equal to the number of remaining seats after first list parents are granted admissions. The lucky parents whose child’s name shows up get a seat in that school.
Yes parents are allowed to carry mobile phones at the time of form collection, submission, the draw of lots & final admission. The parents can even film the whole process of draw of lots in their camera.
The DOE (Directorate of Education) shall set up a District Admission Monitoring Committee (DAMC) in each district of Delhi & the concerned Dy. Director (Education), Directorate of education shall be the chairperson of the DAMC. The concerned education officers/ DY. Education officers of the Directorate of education & concerned education officer of MCD/ NDMC/ Delhi Cantt. Board as the case may be, shall be the member of DAMC. The committee shall also establish a Help-Desk in the district office to help parents regarding admissions during office hours which will be manned by two well conversant officials of the District. The help desk shall be functional till the admission process is closed.
Any parent who wants to question any action(s) of a school may file a complaint in writing to the DAMC, addressed to the concerned Dy Director of education (Chairperson). The DAMC shall take an appropriate action within a well defined time. The response shall be uploaded on the website: www.edudel.nic.in.
Any demand of donation or payment or favors or contribution other than the regular fee structure of the school is considered as a capitation fee & as per the order of Honourable High Court under Section 13(1) of RTE Act, 2009, no school or individual shall, while admitting a child, collect Capitation fee/Donation from the parents. Any school or person who caught in the act shall be punishable with fine which may extend up to ten times the capitation fee charged.
The school may retain Registration Fee (Rs.25), Admission Fee (Rs.200) & Tuition Fee for one month only & shall refund all other fee or other charges within 15 days of the request with a proper receipt.
No, the schools must collect the fee from parents on monthly basis

A birth certificate is one most important document which every school checks at the time of registration & admission. If you do not have it right now, apply for it as soon as possible. Although for the EWS/DG category, written declaration/undertaking from parents about the date of birth is treated as a valid proof of date of birth of the child.
Yes Aadhar card along with the birth certificate is one of the most critical documents during Delhi school admissions. If you do not have the aadhar card copy, you can attach the aadhar enrollment slip in your school application. Schools accept that. Although you need to produce the original Aadhar at the time of admissions.
No as per the DOE article dated 25 December 2017, it is illegal to use multiple addresses for admission purposes, even if the address proof is valid.
Some schools accept the rent receipt but most of the schools do not. To be on the safe side, get your aadhar card’s address modified which could be amended on showing your rent receipt. The Aadhar updating process takes time, so even if you do not have the updated Aadhar card copy, you can add an enrollment slip of the Aadhar application & later produce the updated Aadhar card at the time of admissions.

A lot of Schools these days ask for Child’s Medical Certificate along with an Immunization card which clearly verifies that the child is free from any allergies & diseases. The certificate & immunization card must be signed by a registered medical practitioner. Some schools like GD Goenka also want the certificate & card to have a printed enrollment ID of the doctor.

Affidavits are demanded as a self-declaration proof for some of the documents. Eg: Adopted Child, the distance of school from home are some of the common affidavits. The affidavits must be on non-judicial stamp paper duly signed by a notary. Some schools come up with their own formats & want the parents to get it done in that prescribed format only. The notary is usually aware of such patterns.

Last year in 2018-19 Delhi School Admissions), there were approximately 5,00,000 applications for 1,25,000 seats in 1,700 private unaided schools under the General category.
It varies from school to school, although the DOE has a guideline that the number of seats at the entry levels shall not be less than the highest number of seats in the entry-level classes during the last three admission seasons. The schools must declare all the details of the entry level classes (i.e. Nursery/KG/l) along with the seats available for admission on the directorate’s website as well as on their notice board & website.
Note: Allocation of management quota is an abolished selection parameter mandated by the DOE, although a lot of private unaided schools still form it as a basis of selection.
For admission to the Private Unaided schools of Delhi, the age of the applicant is calculated as on 31 March of the year in which admission is sought.
General Category:
No, as per DOE’s guidelines which stated that from 2021-22 onwards, the child must be between 3Yrs and 4Yrs as on 31 March of the admission year. Not even a day’s relaxation is given to the parents. Though you can apply in KG for your kid. The applicants belonging to EWS/DG category might get relations (See the above answer)
Old rule (General Category):
The child should be exactly between 3 years and 4 years as on 31 March (Of the admission year) to qualify for nursery admissions.
Eg: For Admission 2021-22, There are few children who are born on eg 5 April 2018 (child will be less than 3 years of age as on 31 March 2021) or 25 March 2017 (child will be more than 4 years as on 31 March 2021); till last year the schools would have rejected such applications and would not have accepted even a day’s difference.
New rule (Introduced in Admission year 2020-21 for General Category):
As per the new rule there is a relaxation of 30 days, both of lower and upper age limit. Parents need to drop a manual application in the school.
Similarly, for KG and 1st class admissions.
But the Schools are flouting this rule. I don’t have any exhaustive list of schools accepting April born children. You need to make that manual effort of reaching out to schools.
Even if the kid is one day short of 3 years as, on 31 March of the admission, he/she is not eligible for the nursery admissions in private unaided schools of Delhi. The applicants belonging to EWS/DG category might get relations (See the first answer)
